What Your Mother Never Told You About Sex (Paperback)

What Your Mother Never Told You About Sex

From Publishers Weekly

Hutcherson, codirector of the New York Center for Human Sexuality at Columbia Presbyterian Medical Center, believes that many women have unfulfilling sex lives. They may be hesitant to speak to their partners, uneasy about their appearance or, most likely, they simply have questions they’ve never been able to ask about sex. An obstetrician and gynecologist for more than 20 years, Hutcherson believes the key to better sex is knowledge. She offers a comprehensive look at men and women’s bodies, including key information about erogenous zones, as well as chapters on different elements of sex, such as kissing, intercourse and oral stimulation. Hutcherson also discusses special topics such as sex during pregnancy and after menopause, and has a useful, albeit too brief, chapter on teaching daughters the facts. Complete with diagrams of anatomy and sex positions, this book is aimed at helping women first become more comfortable with their own sexuality, (more…)

Guess What Came to Dinner?: Parasites and Your Health (Paperback)

Guess What Came to Dinner?: Parasites and Your Health

From Publishers Weekly

A nutrition director for the American Academy of Nutrition and the author of the bestseller Beyond Pritikin , Gittleman has exhaustively studied the parasite world, particularly its relation to human health and nutrition. Although she tackles the subject of parasitic illnesses and their diagnosis, treatment and prevention with knowledge and a credible background, her book offers in ten chapters what could have been done in a single long but concise one. In a hit-and-run style, the author touches on a specific subject, be it day care centers, household pets, or travel, only to drop it and repeat the information in another section of the book. This repetition, combined with constant footnotes, disrupts and clutters a reading of the book. Readers without some background in clinical parasitology may also have a hard time staying with Gittleman through the technical section that serves as a reference guide to the individual parasites. The chapter on pr (more…)

What Nurses Know and Doctors Don’t Have Time to Tell You (Paperback)

What Nurses Know and Doctors Don't Have Time to Tell You

From Publishers Weekly

In this useful home healthcare guide, Carroll offers the insight of a nurse to help readers understand and treat common medical conditions such as skin rashes and joint pains. Rather than following the general practice of organizing a self-care guide around specific diagnoses-which, she argues, makes such guides “hard to use unless you can diagnose yourself correctly first”-she lists the topics by symptoms, starting with the most common medical complaint: headaches. She then works through topics like eye irritation, toothaches, constipation and dizziness. In each section, she explains what the symptoms look and feel like, answers FAQs and decisively informs readers when the symptoms might be serious enough to warrant a call to a healthcare pro or a trip to the emergency room. The book also includes information on dealing with injuries like sprains and cuts, choosing and using medications, fighting through the difficulties of the healthcare system (more…)

The Candida Control Cookbook: What You Should Know and What You Should Eat to Manage Yeast Infections (New Revised & Updated Edition) (Paperback)

The Candida Control Cookbook: What You Should Know and What You Should Eat to Manage Yeast Infections (New Revised & Updated Edition)

Candida is a toxicity syndrome that affects millions of women, but the diet that doctors recommend to patients with this affliction severely restricts many of the foods that make life pleasurable – all sugars, most fresh fruits, milk and milk products, white rice, barley, wheat, most cheeses, all alcohol and fizzy drinks, mushrooms, coffee and most flours. When Gail Burton, a gourmet cook and former food writer from California learned how drastically her medical condition limited her menu options, she wrote the book to help fellow sufferers reintroduce variety and taste into their otherwise bland diets – without sacrificing their health. She includes over 150 yeast-free gourmet recipes from appetizers to desserts, a food chart of problem and permitted foods, a 14-day menu planner, and lists of safe substitute products and sources, including manufacturers.
